Dogs and the Transpersonal
Have you ever seen those dogs working at airports, looking for drugs or explosives? They are so cheerful because for them this is all a game. If they find what their owner seems to want, they will get candy and that makes them super excited! They do not care about drugs, nor understand a thing about explosives; they are totally oblivious about the real reason they are there for. They really think it is all a game for them to get candy! So sweet :)
I fly a lot to teach around the world and when I see those happy dogs they remind me of us, humans, with our love, romance, and sexuality. To me, it seems like we are like them. When we find a sexual partner(s) we get the candy, yet, we are oblivious about the real reason all this is happening. We are focusing on the personal level of connection, between us and the other(s), like these happy dogs that are so cheerful to take part in the game. What we are not aware of is that there are bigger powers that are putting us in this game.
Our souls, for instance. Our souls are holding our body-minds on a leash and, while we take pleasure on the level of sensation and self worth, they are interested in this connection from a higher level — our souls need to meet, some sparks of divinity need to be shared between us, and our love and sexuality become the vehicles, the means, for this transmission.
The ancient Greeks saw Eros as a godly being. Eros itself is a divine force that is a part of what is happening here on Earth, from the first night millions and millions of years ago when two micro-organisms “decided” to share their DNA with each other and let the mystery mix it in a creative way. Since then Eros is moving evolution and pushing it forward, from one-cell organisms to dinosaurs and from humanoid apes to us, homo-sapiens, sitting now by the computer and reading little black dots we call “text".
Eros is a divine power that holds all life on a leash and is aiming at some transpersonal goal while we get our personal candy in the form of love, sex, romance, and all that gives us pleasure.
In the same way that we can see ourselves as cells in one body, we can also become interested in the divine mystery that is moving us around, making us fall in love, get attracted to each other, share our juices and get our candy. We can lift our eyes from the “I” to the transpersonal and expand while we eat our candy, and wink to the divine powers that have their way with us that we are starting to be aware of what is really happening here, and we say yes!
